The Carpet Wars: From Kabul to Baghdad: A Ten-Year Journey Along Ancient Trade Routes

The Carpet Wars: From Kabul to Baghdad: A Ten-Year Journey Along Ancient Trade Routes

Apart from oil, rugs are the Muslim world's best-known commodity. While rugs are found in most Western homes, the story of religious, political, and tribal strife behind their creation is virtually unknown. In The Carpet Wars, award-winning journalist Christopher Kremmer chronicles his fascinating ten-year journey along the ancient carpet trade routes that run through the world's most misunderstood and volatile regions -- Afghanistan, Iran, Iraq, India, Pakistan, and the former Soviet republics of Central Asia.
Christopher Kremmer's odyssey through the crescent of Islamic nations began in the early 1990s, when he arrived in Afghanistan to meet the communist-backed president, Mohammed Najibullah. On the outskirts of Kabul, mujahideen rebels were massing while the carpet dealers of the old city continued to ply their timeless trade. Kremmer was in Kabul when the mujahideen turned their guns on one another after ridding the country of the hated communists. He was there when the Taliban came and the army of religious students -- aided by the wealthy Arab radical Osama bin Laden -- emerged from the scorched earth to implement their vision of "a pure Islamic state."
Traveling through these territories, Kremmer chronicles Islamic societies as they were convulsed by dictatorship and greed and as refugees sought asylum in the West. He cemented lifelong friendships and met an unforgettable cast of characters, from nomads toiling on portable handlooms to shady merchants and leaders of the syndicates that control the bazaars. In the remote Hindu Kush, he celebrated Eid with the late Afghan guerrilla legend Ahmad Shah Massoud. In Kandahar, he took tea with Taliban leaders and went hunting for Osama bin Laden. He watched as a new generation questioned the power of the mullahs in Iran, while in Iraq the populace chafed under the weight of sanctions and Saddam Hussein's cult of personality.
The Carpet Wars takes readers into a world where even the simplest motif on a rug can be filled with religious, tribal, and political significance, places where life bustles with bargaining and gossip in bazaars and teahouses, while nations crumble, leaders fall, and the final confrontation between freedom and terror looms.
An edge-of-the-chair travel memoir, The Carpet Wars offers a personal, vivid, and revealing look at Islam's human face, wracked by turmoil but sustained by friendship, industry, and humor. It is also a historical snapshot of countries at the center of global confrontation that exploded onto the homefront on September 11, 2001.

In Afghanistan, Pakistan, Kashmir, Iran, Iraq, and the Central Asian republics, carpets are viewed as objects of reverence and expressions of the highest artistic achievement. As the region's second largest export behind oil, they are also big business. "The early Muslims inhabited lands where people were born on carpets, prayed on them, and covered their tombs with them. For centuries, carpets have been a currency and an export, among the first commodities of a globalized trading system," writes author Christopher Kremmer. Even in the midst of turmoil and war, a bazaar will spring up during breaks in the fighting and carpet merchants will quickly resume business as if nothing had happened. In this detailed look at the culture and recent history of these countries, the carpet trade serves as both backdrop and metaphor for the shadowy and complex politics of the region in which trickery, illusion, and manipulation are part of the game.
The result of 10 years spent as a journalist in the region, Kremmer's book explains how the fragile web of tribal and religious alliances and the influence of outside powers have impacted the politics and economy of the area and began a continuous cycle of exile and return, along with the rise of militarism and terrorism. The book also serves as excellent travel writing, with fascinating anecdotes and telling conversations and encounters that illustrate the customs of a region that is now the focus of international attention. --Shawn Carkonen

The 2011-2016 World Outlook for Parts and Attachments for Commercial and Industrial Floor and Carpet Cleaning Equipment

The 2011-2016 World Outlook for Parts and Attachments for Commercial and Industrial Floor and Carpet Cleaning Equipment

This econometric study covers the world outlook for parts and attachments for commercial and industrial floor and carpet cleaning equipment across more than 200 countries. For each year reported, estimates are given for the latent demand, or potential industry earnings (P.I.E.), for the country in question (in millions of U.S. dollars), the percent share the country is of the region and of the globe. These comparative benchmarks allow the reader to quickly gauge a country vis-a-vis others. Using econometric models which project fundamental economic dynamics within each country and across countries, latent demand estimates are created. This report does not discuss the specific players in the market serving the latent demand, nor specific details at the product level. The study also does not consider short-term cyclicalities that might affect realized sales. The study, therefore, is strategic in nature, taking an aggregate and long-run view, irrespective of the players or products involved.

This study does not report actual sales data (which are simply unavailable, in a comparable or consistent manner in virtually all of the 230 countries of the world). This study gives, however, my estimates for the worldwide latent demand, or the P.I.E., for parts and attachments for commercial and industrial floor and carpet cleaning equipment. It also shows how the P.I.E. is divided across the world's regional and national markets. For each country, I also show my estimates of how the P.I.E. grows over time (positive or negative growth). In order to make these estimates, a multi-stage methodology was employed that is often taught in courses on international strategic planning at graduate schools of business.

The (carpet) hook

The (carpet) hook

The hook -no pun intended originally!- is: at the end of the demo, they politely tell you that you don't HAVE to buy anything...but they serve you free wine, spread lots of carpets on the floor, and ask you what colors you like!
I couldn't believe how much my parents wound up spending in the end...while nowhere near the upper realm of carpet luxury, it was more than I've ever imagined spending on something like that.

The Unaffordable Carpet

The Unaffordable Carpet

Yup, after the carpet-making demo, it was sales time. We were shown three different qualities of carpet. This one required about a year of a masterworker's effort. The salesman didn't bother to tell us how much it cost; he just said we couldn't afford it! So I thought I would hold it for the only time I could...

Bucker Jungmanns - better than Moths

Bucker Jungmanns - better than Moths

KLM pilots Chris Beal and Pete Brand, based at Stansted Airport, say their favourite show-stopper is the mirror formation when one flies above the other, only upside down.

But airline passengers need not fear . . . the daring duo only execute this pulse-racing manoeuvre while at the controls of their classic Bucker Jungmanns, the highly aerobatic bi-planes which the Nazis built to secretly train future Luftwaffe pilots.

When they are not flying to European destinations Chris, 36, from Bishops Stortford, push their 1930s designed two-seaters close to the edge way up in the blue yonder.

The hair-raisingt Bucker Formation Team (BFT) begin the flying season at North Weald Air Show on May 16.

Chris teamed up the Pete last year to launch the BFT both having had experience with solo aerobatics and flown the craft for the last five years.

Pete said: "It just seemed a good idea to link up, Airshow audiences seem to like seeing two aircraft performing together.

"We did a couple of shows last year, but we are now heavily booked all over the UK, with two dates in Northern Ireland and one in France.

"We certainly don't do it for the money, which only covers expenses, but for the thrill of it all.

"Formation aerobatics is about trust and discipline, I fly the show and Chris mirrors my moves.

"It's a way of unwinding, something we do as a leisure sport in the same way other people go windsurfing or carpet bowls.

"It's not dangerous - we spend a lot of time working on the safety aspect, we also have parachutes just in case," said Chris, who professionally flies a four-engined BA146 whisper jet as straight and level as possible.

In contrast, his Jungmann, or Student, while only equipped with compass, airspeed indicator and altimeter, is a dream to fly aerobaticaly.

It can carry out a wide variety of tight manoeuvres - which made it such a favourite with German pilots - including his favourite, the salmon leap flick roll, just a few feet away from Pete's plane, at a cruising speed of 100mph.

"They are very agile, outflying Tiger Moths and , I would say, the best bi-plane of its day, built with superb German craftmanship and using the latest in light steel materialsm " said Chris.

He had ambitions to fly as a young lad, watching small planes take off from a grass airstrip near his home at White Waltham and first obtained a Private Pilots Licence at 18 before advancing with KLM UK to become a fully fledged captain flying BA 145 whisper jets.

Both Jungmanns carry distrinctive Second World War Luftwaff markings, replicating the original planes, and are the only aerobatic duo in the UK in the UK, and, probably the rest of the EEC.

"Mine carries the colour scheme of an original 1937 Luftwaffe Jungmann, based at Darmstadt, although it was actually built under licence in Span in 1954 and served as a trainer in the Spanish Air Force," said Chris.

His Jungmann is based at an Essex airfield where the duo are licensed to practice aerobatics, while Pete stores his bi-plane, which he re-build from a variety of components based upon a German company demonstrator, on farmland near Ware.

Empty Convention Centre

Taken from one of the leather couches in the Perth Convention & Exhibition Centre, while people leaving work streamed past to take the lift to the carpark. My still-novice attempts at HDR didn't quite work out as I'd hoped, but at least most of the image is clear and I think that justifies all of the weird looks I got ;-)

Despite the "giant clearance booksale" behind me, and whatever was happening in the ballroom, the place was pretty dead that day!
